Supplier Spotlight: Foodpoint Produce – Innovating Fresh Produce with Biofuel & Tech
In this edition of our Supplier Spotlight series, we’re introducing Foodpoint Produce, a company that is redefining what it means to be an innovative and sustainable food supplier.
Founded by Stefano, a dynamic entrepreneur with more than a decade in the food industry, Foodpoint Produce is not just another London based supplier it’s a business built on hard work, adaptability, and a passion for progress. With exciting developments in biofuel-powered logistics, cutting-edge software, and sustainable operations, we’re thrilled to have them as part of the United Fresh family.
Now, let’s dive into our conversation with Stefano, Founder and Managing Director of Foodpoint Produce.
UF: Thanks for taking the time to chat with us! Could you start by giving us a bit of background on Foodpoint Produce and how it all started?
Of course! Foodpoint Produce started in 2015 after I had spent years working in Covent Garden Market, learning everything there is to know about the food supply chain. I wasn’t born into the industry, I learned on the job, working my way through operations, procurement, logistics, and sales.
Starting my own business was a huge risk. In the first two years, it was just me and one other person. We had no warehouse, no sales team, just determination. We packed and loaded trucks in empty bays, handled buying, picking, and packing at night, and then drove the deliveries in the day while also finding new clients. I reinvested everything back into the business.
Nine years later Foodpoint now operates from 6 arches in the infamous New Covent Garden Market, running a fleet of delivery vehicles and serving an ever-growing customer base.
UF: You’re known for having a fresh and modern approach to the industry. What sets Foodpoint Produce apart from other suppliers?
A lot of food supply businesses are long-time family-run operations, and while there’s a lot of tradition in the industry, I believe there’s also a huge need for innovation. We’re different because we don’t just follow the old ways of doing things, we’re highly adaptable to customer trends and we drive our use of technology to improve efficiency.
Grownet, for example, is a specialised software for our trade that was born at Foodpoint. Built by suppliers, for suppliers. It streamlines the entire process in depot from picking, packing, and delivery, to making operations smoother and more ultimately enabling a more sustainable future.
"We’re different because we don’t just follow the old ways of doing things, we’re highly adaptable to customer trends and we drive our use of technology to improve efficiency."
UF: Sustainability is a huge topic in food supply. What steps is Foodpoint taking to improve its environmental impact?
Sustainability and innovation is at the heart of our future plans. Right now, we’re running a trial with Biofuel as an alternative to diesel for our fleet. If it proves successful and viable, we’ll transition 100% of our vehicles to biofuel. Unlike electric vehicles (EV) solutions, which still pose practical challenges in our sector, biofuel is a realistic and immediate way to reduce our carbon footprint.
On top of that, our fully paperless operations help cut down unnecessary waste, and we’re always looking at ways to make our supply chain more efficient and eco-friendlier.
UF: The food supply industry has had its challenges in recent years. What have been some of the biggest hurdles you’ve faced?
Food supply is fast-paced and demanding. In the early days, my biggest challenge was simply keeping up with our increasing demand while balancing all aspects of the business with limited resources. Now, as we grow, the challenges have shifted. Rising fuel and labour costs, constant supply chain disruptions, and evolving customer expectations means we constantly have to adapt and innovate.
But challenges also bring opportunity, which we love! That’s why we focus so much on technology and sustainability, they’re key to staying ahead in a competitive industry.
"Biofuel is a realistic and immediate way to reduce our carbon footprint."
UF: Can you share any particularly proud moments or milestones from your journey?
There are so many, but one that stands out is moving into our four arches in the historic market. It felt like a full-circle moment, going from working in empty bays to now having a fully operational space with a growing fleet in the middle of the UK’s hub for fresh produce!
Another big moment was launching Grownet. Seeing other suppliers benefit from the system we built has been incredibly rewarding.
UF: Looking ahead, what exciting projects or developments can we expect from Foodpoint Produce?
We have big plans! Aside from expanding to our (trial dependent) biofuel fleet, we’re also rolling out new features in Grownet to further improve efficiency for suppliers. We’re always looking at new ways to improve our operations while keeping up with changing customer needs.
UF: Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to others looking to start a business in food supply, what would it be?
Be prepared to work hard! This industry doesn’t sleep, and success comes from persistence, adaptability, and always striving for improvement.
Also, don’t be afraid to innovate. Just because something has been done a certain way for decades doesn’t mean it’s the best way. Find your own way and embrace new opportunities.
A huge thank you to Stefano and the Foodpoint Produce team for sharing their incredible journey with us! Their passion for innovation, sustainability, and customer-focused solutions makes them an exciting and valuable addition to our supplier network.
