Concerns over Arla Food's use of Bovaer
We understand some serious concerns have been raised about Arla Food’s use of Bovaer, a feed additive designed to reduce cow methane emissions by up to 45%.
As you may or may not be aware: this product has been approved for use in 68 countries, and was approved for use in the UK in December 2023.
The Food Standards Agency has released the following statement:
“Milk from cows given Bovaer, a feed additive used to reduce methane emissions, is safe to drink. The additive is metabolised by the cows so does not pass into the milk.
Bovaer, a brand name for the additive 3-Nitrooxypropanol or “3-NOP”, has undergone rigorous safety assessments as part of the FSA’s market authorisation process, and is approved for use in Great Britain. It has also been approved for use in other countries including in the EU, Australia, Canada and the US.”
We appreciate that some of our customers may still have concerns about this issue, and so we are conducting a consortium wide review to identify any affected products. Many of our supply partners work with smaller, local dairies and we expect the vast majority of our dairy products to be unaffected.
The safety of our products is our top priority, it is unfortunate that misinformation has created confusion and uncertainty around this topic. We must emphasise again that all credible sources currently support the safety of Bovaer. At United Fresh, we remain committed to providing credible and transparent information and will take immediate action if any new evidence emerges.
